A quick guide to visa applications

1. Determine the visa type: The first step is to identify the visa type appropriate to your situation. There are a number of visa options for nurses who are looking to live and work in Australia. There are a range of both shorter- and longer-term options. Examples include a Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417), Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482), Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190) and the Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189). All visas have different requirements, length of stay etc. The friendly team at HSSI are available to guide you to the best visa to suit your needs.

2. Check the eligibility requirements: Once you have identified the visa type, carefully review the eligibility criteria to ensure you meet all the requirements. This may include factors such as work experience, English language proficiency, and qualifications.

3. Obtain necessary documents: Gather all the required documents, such as educational certificates, work experience letters, English language test results, and registration certificates from relevant nursing authorities.

4. Skills assessment: Nurses applying for a visa in Australia need to undergo a skills assessment by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC). This assessment verifies your qualifications and work experience.

5.English language proficiency: Nurses need to demonstrate their English language proficiency by taking an approved English language test, such as the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Occupational English Test (OET).

6.Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI): Create an EOI through SkillSelect, the online system used by the Australian government to manage skilled visa applications. Provide all the necessary information about your skills, qualifications, and work experience. Visa applicants must have an occupation listed on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) or Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL).

7. Apply for state nomination (if applicable): If you are applying for a state-sponsored visa (subclass 190), you will need to apply for state nomination from a specific Australian state or territory. Each state has its own nomination criteria and process.

9. Health and character requirements: As part of the visa application process, you will need to undergo a health examination and obtain a police clearance certificate to satisfy the health and character requirements.

10. Wait for visa decision: After submitting your application, it may take some time for the Department of Home Affairs to process your visa application. You can track the progress of your application through the online portal.
