A guide to registering as a NZ Nurse

Step 1: Familiarise Yourself with Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ)

Take some time to explore Nursing Council of New Zealand’s website Internationally Qualified Nurses (nursingcouncil.org.nz) to gain a better understanding of their requirements, processes, and resources available to international nurses. This will help you make informed decisions throughout the registration journey.

Step 2: Verifying documents with CGFNS

All nurses are required to provide documents proving their:

  • identity
  • current registration/s held in the last 10 years
  • nursing qualification equivalent to NZ qualifications
  • evidence of English language proficiency
  • 1,800 hours post-registration nursing experience

You must verify and authenticate your documents first with CGFNS before applying to the Council to register.

Step 3: Apply for NCNZ Registration

Apply to the Nursing Council after your documents are verified & complete the following:

  • Welcome to Aotearoa New Zealand online courses

All nurses must complete two free online courses introducing you to culturally safe nursing practice in New Zealand.

  • Fitness to practise checks

All nurses are required to undergo a criminal history check.

  • Competence assessment

Some nurses will be required to undergo a competence assessment.

  • Use the NCNZ self-assessment tool to see if you might require a competence assessment.

Step 4: NCNZ Assessment

Once your application has been submitted, NCNZ will assess your qualifications, documentation, and criminal history check. They may request additional information or clarification if needed. Patience is key during this stage, as assessment times can vary.

Step 5: Notification of Registration Outcome

You will be notified of the registration outcome by NCNZ. If successful, congratulations! You are now a registered nurse in New Zealand. NCNZ will provide you with your registration details, including your registration number and any conditions or limitations that may apply.

Step 6: Ongoing Requirements

Maintaining your registration requires meeting certain obligations. Stay up to date with NCNZ’s requirements, complete any mandatory continuing professional development (CPD), renew your registration annually, and inform NCNZ of any changes to your personal or professional circumstances.
